The Kinston Hotel Apartments is a beautiful senior living community located in the building previously known as the Kinston Hotel. First built in 1928, and adopted for its current use in the 1960s, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
The 11 stories of the striking Art Deco building are supported by a steel frame and covered with red brick. The structure is accented by design details influenced by Moorish architecture, like the series of horseshoe arches on the facade of the first floor.
The Challenge
As an active senior living facility, the Kinston Hotel Apartments is home to many residents, whose comfort and daily schedules were top of mind for us from the start. Plus, as a nationally-recognized historic place, the integrity of the building and its design were also paramount when approaching this project. Our goal was to install a scaffolding that could reach the very top of the 11-story building, which would provide edge protection for teams working on the steep roof, and do so without disturbing the residents or the building.
The Solution
For this project, our team used systems scaffolding to build a scaffold up one side of the structure and around the roof. Our system’s scaffold is a completely customizable solution, made up of a series of steel parts that lock together individually. This allows our experts to use different lengths of steel poles and sizes of platforms to perfectly fit the dimensions of any building, including those of the one-of-a-kind Kinston Hotel Apartments.
Those customizable parts made it possible for us to construct a scaffold with platforms high enough to not disturb the resident’s ability to enter and exit the building. Plus, we were able to space out the beams and platforms in a way that wouldn’t obstruct the light and views from the windows of the historic building.
